Last week, Thomas and I had a Mummy and Son day in Birmingham. We did some shopping, had a general look round and finished the day with Afternoon Tea at Hotel La Tour. I loved Hotel La Tour when we visited for Stuart’s birthday so jumped at the chance when I was welcomed back to sample the Afternoon Tea.
We were warmly greeted by the staff and taken to our seats in the bar area. I was offered a drink of Prosecco or Earl Grey Tea Bellini. I decided to play it safe and have the Prosecco, however I was given a try of the syrup that they use to create the Bellini with. It was pure Earl Grey. Very delicious!
On the top level there were smoked salmon sandwiches, coronation chicken sandwiches and ham sandwiches. These were accompanied by rarebit with slices of toasted sourdough bread and cucumber wraps. I though all the sandwiches were volley but my favourite was the coronation chicken. It was creamy but not too spicy and had good chunky pieces of chicken in it. The cucumber wraps were a bit boring for me and did not really have much taste. However the rarebit sauce and sourdough bread was sensational. It was thick and creamy and full of yummy cheese, beer and apple. I could eat it by the bucket load!
On the middle level, there was scones topped with freeze dried strawberries with strawberry jam and clotted cream. I love scones and these were fine examples of them. Crispy and lightly golden brown on the outside and light and fluffy in the middle. I gave a tiny bit to Thomas to try and he liked them too.
On the bottom level, there were mini Eton Mess, Walnut Whips, Mini Jaffa Cake puddings and treacle tarts. The Eton Mess had some of the lightest meringue I have ever tasted and melted in the mouth. The mini Jaffa Cake puddings were a smaller version of the pudding I had when I went the first time. The only change was that the chocolate was in the middle.
Hotel La Tour is generally considered to be a business hotel however they are very welcoming to families too. The staff were very kind to Thomas while we were there. A highchair was already provided at the table when we arrived (as I had told them I would be dining with a baby) and they have clean changing facilities located in the disabled toilet, a short walk from the restaurant. My one tiny complaint is that the highchair is much too big for smaller babies and children. Thomas did ok in it but I did have to watch him all the time in case he slipped out.
Afternoon Tea at Hotel La Tour costs £15.95 per person and is available Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons and Bank Holiday Mondays.
